For the most elegant yet the simplest window treatment Roman shades will be what you’re looking for. They serve the purpose of blocking the sun out while giving you all the privacy you need. Roman blinds are cheaper than ornate window shades and nicer than some of the plastic blinds. If it’s your first time lending your hand to decorating then this is the best blind to start with.
It is not difficult to make your own Roman blinds. All that is required to start is make sure that you measure the size of the window you want to put them in. Be sure you measure inside the frame. Of course you can have your shade go outside the frame if you want it to. Next you need to figure out how much material it will take to cover your window. Select the shade of fabric you need. You will find that it is better to work with solid colors for your first try. Shades with patterns usually have to be matched and this can be avoided by using a solid color on your first try.
When you purchase your fabric, there are a few more things you need to get such as drapery lining, a blind cord, a window cleat, quarter inch diameter window dowels, a wooden mounting board, shade rings, screw eyes, a staple gun, a chalk marker and a yardstick. It is easy to find instructions for making your shade. All you have to do is ask for them at your local hardware store or go online where you can see step by step pictures of how to make the shades. You will have to choose a pattern of the type of shades you want whether you are going with flat shades or pleated. Or maybe you want a sunburst pattern. Regardless there is lots of information to see in how to make them. You will also need a sewing machine to make your shades quickly.
