Acrylic Water is a product that is used to create silk flower arrangements in glass vases that make the flowers appear to be in real water. Acrylic water is easy to use but there are some tricks to doing this correctly. Also once your creation is done, it’s impossible to undo so plan carefully.

To start with you’ll need a glass vase, silk flowers and greenery (if you choose), acrylic water and a throw away container that you can use to mix the acrylic water in (cool whip containers work great.

Acrylic water is toxic so don’t drink it but it is basically the same general ingredients that go into an acrylic based paint. The product comes in two parts that are combining to create the faux water. After you mix them you’ll have 20-30 minutes to arrange but keep in mind more arranging can give a good chance for dirt and dust to get in your arrangement.

Start by planning out your arrangement, cut stems that need cutting, and in general figure out how they will go in the vase. It’s good to balance out color and height. Most arrangements have 12-24 flowers and using greenery for accents as needed. For height an arch shape always looks nice. Place the stems approximately where you expect them to go in the vase arrange them and shape them as close to the final as you can.

After you have the general look of what you are after, carefully take them out of the vase and line them up on a large table in order of how they will go back in the vase. Wash the vase well to get out all the debris from the layout process. Place the vase on a surface that is covered to avoid damaging a surface (just as if you were painting).

Mix the acrylic water (follow the directions, typically it’s a 50/50 mix). This should be clear, if it is not, place bottom of the mixing bowl in warm water (don’t get water in the mix). Carefully pour the mix into the center of the vase, make sure not to pour on the sides of the vase. The mix will level itself. Start putting your arrangement in right away, wipe the stems before placing them in the vase. You can move them around a little bit but try not to play too much. If you are trying an unusual positioning, you may want to use some wire to hold things in place but for most arrangements, a mix will hold stems in place just fine. Set the vase aside where it won’t be disturbed. Typically the mix takes 24 hours in normal conditions to set up, in some cases it may take a little longer. If there is a doubt, let it sit another day. After the mix is set you can go about shaping your arrangement by bending the silk flowers to the precise position you need for color and shape balance.

There are a few tricks to add some interesting elements, the faux water can be dyed with an acrylic dye. Ball bearings (or marbles) can be pushed in the mix to give an illusion of bubbles. Let you imagination run wild. If you’ve never used acrylic water before, you may want to experiment with a small amount in a throw away glass just to see how it works.
